Over one-third of the energy consumed in Vienna is for transport purposes. Only five percent of this is for trams, buses and the underground. And remember that the underground achieves 10 to 15 times the performance of individual motorised traffic.
Put another way: A journey by car produces up to ten times more CO2 emissions than a journey made using the underground.
The city of Vienna aims to increase the share of journeys by public transport, as well as by bicycle and on foot, to 80 percent. Gaps in the transport network are being closed and capacity increased on heavily used lines.
