The first partial opening of the U4 subway line between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke and the GW and WG lines replaced this line.

Line DG: Hietzing –> Meidling Hauptstraße

Due to the construction work of the subway line U4 between Donaukanal and Gürtel, this section had to be closed. The extension of the subway line U4 to Schottenring and the lines U4, GD and W replaced it. The line GD was still in service until 1989.

After the DG/GD light rail line was discontinued and the U2 line was quite short in its initial stages, the U2 was to be connected to the U4 network and both subway lines were to be extended to form a light rail line. Severe operational disruptions were the result and after only 17 days of operation, trial operation was discontinued. Causes included the line bifurcations.

The DG line was already closed in 1978, when the section between the Danube Canal and the Gürtel was closed due to the U4 construction work. It was only operated on the Gürtel line. Finally it was discontinued and the U6 replaced it.

As part of the construction work on the U6 line, the Meidling Hauptstraße station was replaced by a new station. An excessively wide platform, still indicates the no longer existing third track in the station.

U2 tunnel Schottentor – Schottenring

The U2 extension in the direction of the station also required a new line tunnel between Schottentor and Schottenring stations. This tunnel was built further south and at Schottenring station an extra-wide platform indicates the former U2 track. Another track was relocated to the U1/U4 connecting tunnel and serves as an operating track.

U4 tunnel Margaretengürtel – Meidling Hauptstraße

The U6 construction required a complete new construction between the stations Margaretengürtel and Meidling Hauptstrasse. In this area, a new tunnel was built further south. The old tunnel serves as an operating and sidings track.

In the course of the construction of the U6 northbound, the old tunnel was replaced by a new tunnel further west.

In the course of the construction of the U3, the old U6 tunnel including the U6 station was abandoned and rebuilt in the Westbahnhof area. A new tunnel was built further to the east.

In order to make room for the new Spittelau station to be built, the northbound U6 line between Heiligenstädter Straße and Friedensbrücke station was partially removed as part of the construction work. The U6 station Friedensbrücke was also abandoned and is now served by the U4.

In the course of the extension of the U2 in the direction of the stadium, all U2 stations – except this one – were extended for operation with long trains. Due to the small station distance of 200 meters to the station Volkstheater, this station was abandoned in 2003.
