Line U1 of the Vienna underground was opened on May 3rd, 1978 and is the oldest line of the Vienna underground network. It runs from Leopoldau in the northwest of Vienna to Reumannplatz in the southeast of the city, crossing the city center. The U1 line has a total of 23 stations and is 16.2 kilometers long. The line has a significant role in the history of Vienna as it is an important connection for commuters and tourists and has contributed significantly to the development of the city.

Some things worth knowing about line U1:

  • U1 is the first line to be opened in Vienna and at that time only had 9 stations between Reumannplatz and Leopoldau.
  • U1 also has the longest tunnel section in Vienna with almost 5km length under the Danube
  • The U1 line is one of the busiest lines in Vienna and is very important for local public transport in Vienna.
  • Some stations like Karlsplatz and Schwedenplatz are very popular with tourists and also have historical significance.

During extensions and renovations, the U1 subway line was refreshed and modernized and will continue to play an important role in Vienna’s local public transport system in the future.
